People like surprises but they don't like unpredictability. What a handbook does is set baseline rules, do's, don'ts, regulations, and expectations for the workplace. If I'm going to do this and I'm trying to create protections and I'm trying to create expectations and predictability, what I don't want to do as an employer is set myself up for problems. There is no cookie cutter employee handbook for an employer, and so in a scenario where I'm working with a business that has the right number of employees and they need a handbook, and usually it's early-stage entrepreneurs and new businesses that a lot of times have never done one before, what we do is try to understand: What do you want your business to look like? How do you want this to work? When we as lawyers work with our clients here at BHMK, we're trying to understand what they want their business to look like. So we're taking those sets of policies and procedures that you need to have that are the integral part of having a handbook, but then we're trying to make it fit what they want their business to look like. We've helped clients navigate through the issues and the problems and the rocky seas that inevitably come up. Everyone has great intentions on the front side, but problems are going to take place. And when you have advisors that can help guide the business and the business owners and the decision makers through those difficult processes—we're talking about people's employment and their living and the conditions that they're working in every day—these are emotional, meaningful conversations. But having been there and done that and dealt with it for literally hundreds of years collectively, we're in a position to say this isn't our first rodeo. We've been there, we've dealt with similar things. Let us help you get through this so you can focus on what's important, and that's running your business, making money, and taking care of your family.
